August 2003: Updating Websites.

The MANOVERBOARD Telegraph, No. 5.

Welcome back to The Telegraph, the newsletter from MANOVERBOARD, a Web and print design and consulting company based in Brooklyn, New York. MANOVERBOARD creates and develops clear and compelling websites and visual resources for small and large organizations. This month's newsletter includes information on designing websites for the hearing and visually impaired, a new site launch, and favicons.

Design Focus: Editing Your Website

A few years ago, it was unusual that an average organization could afford a tool to edit their own informational website. While clients wanted to edit text, images, pages, links, it was simply easier to hire a contractor to make the updates. Although a powerful content management system for complex database-driven sites can be had for much less money these days, editing informational sites is still expensive and tedious.

A new product has emerged thanks to Macromedia. Its Contribute application is an inexpensive, off-the-shelf editing tool that can allow anybody who has ever used Microsoft Word to post new content to their site. The organization's website needs to built in the first place with Contribute in mind; but, after that, individuals or teams can become online publishing mavens. MANOVERBOARD is currently developing sites for clients with this new technology.

Recent Mentions: Seth Godin

It's been a trying month of heat, power outages, and strange, electoral politics, but I'm very honored that MANOVERBOARD received a kind mention in author Seth Godin's blog this Monday. Seth's recent book, Purple Cow, has become a staple for many Web designers and developers and I'm truly flattered by his compliment about the MANOVERBOARD website.

Clients: A Whole Lot of Thank Yous

Many new and ongoing clients have engaged MANOVERBOARD with new and exciting projects, including the redesign of a high-end retailer's national website, the creation of a major Columbia Business School report, and website design and production for Acumen Fund, The State of New York, No-Flake Paint, and Canopy Designs Ltd. More in September.

Featured Artist: Tricia Keightley

The Site at MANOVERBOARD, an online art project space that is now over five years old, is pleased to present the recent and glorious paintings of Tricia Keightley, a recent recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts' Painting Fellowship.
